Terminal Aerodome Forecast

Posted: 30 Jul 2021 05:37 AM

While the IEM generally focuses on observation data, there are a few NWS forecast products to be found as well. The featured chart presents an infographic from one such forecast product, the Terminal Aerodome Forecast (TAF). The NWS issues TAFs to support the aviation community and the format of the forecast follows the METAR format. The chart shows various components of the forecast including ceilings, visibility, and winds. The forecast covers about the next 24 hours of time and the color coding denotes the flight condition based on the forecast components. This featured forecast is for the Sioux City airport (KSUX identifier) from last night and shows the forecast presence of smoke (code "FU"). The smoke was again very noticeable last night over northern Iowa.
