Cedar Rapids Step-ups

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 05:35 AM

On Saturday, Cedar Rapids reported its warmest temperature of the year at 47 degrees. On Sunday, it beat that level by thirteen degrees with a high temperature of 60! The featured chart presents some metrics related to the step up in warmest year to date daily high temperature for the site. The top panel displays the number of events each year that have a daily high temperature warmer than any previous day that year. The second panel displays a histogram of the temperature that it occurred at and the bottom panel shows a histogram of occurrences by day of the year. For the bottom panel, the spike during early January is just a fluke of this accounting method as days near the first of the year are very likely to be warmer than just a limited population of previous days. The preferred time of year for these step ups in temperature is during March and slowly decreases all the way until September.
