High Wind Warning Counts

Posted: 14 Jan 2021 05:36 AM

Winds were howling Wednesday over the High Plains with a few reports of sustained winds over 70 MPH! The NWS issued a High Wind Warning, which is the headline that covers these large scale significant wind events, for a very large area that included portions of northwestern Iowa. The featured map presents an accounting of the number of High Wind Warnings issued per NWS Forecast Office (WFO) over the past ten years. WFOs with mountains and over the High Plains are certainly more likely to experience such conditions. Winds will again be howling on Thursday as a big winter storm works its way over the plains.
