May Winds with Sub-50 Temps

Posted: 13 May 2019 05:34 AM

Air temperatures were a struggle this past weekend with high temperatures well below average and not much sunshine. On Sunday, winds were generally from the east and the featured chart showing a wind rose during May when temperatures are below 50 show that direction to be one of the favored for such cool values. Of course, the chart also shows a lack of much frequency of having southwesterly winds at chilly May temperatures. This is intuitive as such winds are typically bringing us warmer air from the Gulf of Mexico region. So the trick this week will be to get warmer air masses to visit the state without sparking thunderstorms as farmers and most Iowans desperately need a week of dry and warm weather.
