Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
408 AM CST Fri Jan 21 2022

Bitter cold temperatures will greet everyone this Friday morning.
Early morning readings vary from near zero in the southwest to as low
as 18 below in the north. Winds have become light and variable most
areas as an area of high pressure moves across the state.

As the high slides east, winds will pick up a bit this morning as
south winds increase over the west and north. This will knock wind
chills back down to 25 to 35 below over a large portion of the state
early today. Wind Chill Advisories are in effect for the cold until
mid morning northwest and until noon central and east. Highs today
will recover to the lower teens northeast to the mid 20s to lower 30s
in the far west as clouds increase ahead of a minor weather system. A
weak front will pass south later this evening and overnight with a
brief period of light snow or flurries across the region. A light
dusting of snow, generally under an inch is expected north and east by
late tonight. After lows in the single digits to upper teens tonight,
Saturday will see highs recover to the mid teens northeast to the mid
to upper 30s in the west. A stronger clipper system will dive
southeast later Saturday afternoon and quickly move across central
Iowa, bringing a quick couple of inches of snow to the northeast areas
of the state Saturday evening into the overnight. Roads will become
snow covered in those areas and some travel impacts are anticipated.
Lows Saturday night will drop to near zero in the far north with teens
to lower 20s in the south. Another chance of light snow will graze
northeast Iowa Sunday night, but only a dusting is anticipated.

Early next week temperatures will moderate to the 20s to lower 40s
Monday, but another Arctic blast arrives for Tuesday with highs back
to the single digits and teens with overnight lows hitting 10 to 20
below over a large area of the state by Wednesday morning. Thursday
looks milder as highs reach the 20s northeast to the 40s southwest
once again.
