Finally, a dry day!
25 Jun 2010 06:04 AMThursday was finally a day without rain in the state and interrupted a very wet period. The featured chart displays the statewide averaged daily rainfall as estimated by the IEM since 1 May. While values may not appear to be very large, once spread over the entire state it equates into a lot of water! Friday is expected to be mostly dry until later in the afternoon when thunderstorms are expected to develop and stick around into Saturday.

Catching up on GDDs
27 May 2010 05:09 AMThe featured graph displays the accumulated growing degree days for May here in Ames. The cold weather during the middle of May allowed deficits to accumulate, but our recent stretch of warm weather has nearly caught us back to climatology. The warm weather looks to continue into the weekend with highs back in the 70s for next week.

Quite hot for May
26 May 2010 05:09 AMThis past Sunday and Monday saw high temperatures over 90 for most of the state and lows around 70. For May, these two days were some of the warmest on record and the warmest for days prior to 25 May as shown by the featured illustration. The two days were also exceptional for having low temperatures above 70, which was only the sixth time that has happened in May dating back to 1893. All of these values are statewide areal averages computed by the IEM.

Dew points ramping up
24 May 2010 05:08 AMThe featured chart shows an hourly temperature and dew point time series for Ames this May. The past four days have seen a remarkable increase in dew point with values over 70 on Sunday. The chart shows how the first three weeks of May barely saw a dew point reading above 50, oh how the weather has shifted gears from spring to summer like!

Only one really warm day
19 May 2010 05:23 AMThe featured chart displays the daily high and low temperature percentile from Ames for May. only one day this month has seen a very warm high temperature with the rest near 50 or below and sometimes well below! There is still hope that 80s will arrive this weekend, which would be a bit above average

7 days below 60!
14 May 2010 06:07 AMThe abnormally cool stretch of weather ended up lasting a full week for Ames with high temperatures not reaching 60 degrees. According to IEM data, this sets a record for consecutive days below 60 in May. The featured chart displays the monthly records for Ames and the most recent year the record was set or tied. During the winter months, a large number of years had the entire month below 60. It is interesting to see that July never has had a high temperature below 60 for Ames since 1893. Temperatures will approach 70 today!

Day 5 of 6 below 60 degrees?
11 May 2010 05:13 AMThe featured graph of daily high and low temperatures for Ames shows a period of six days with the high temperature below 60 degrees. A model's forecast for today and tomorrow have yet to verify, but if it does, this period would tie a record for consecutive days below 60 in May. The last time this has happened in Ames was all the way back in 1931. Wet conditions will also persist with even heavier rain expected by the end of the week.

A bit frosty for May
10 May 2010 05:10 AMClear skies and calm winds helped temperatures to drop to frosty levels Sunday morning as shown by the featured IEM analysis of low temperatures. The full impacts of this cold event will take a bit to be determined, but the corn crop was probably not far enough developed to be significantly impacted. Trees and flowers took the brunt of this cold weather with more cool weather expected this week. The big story will be the heavy rainfall along with highs only in the 50s for the next few days.

Windy May
06 May 2010 06:09 AMThe month of May has started off on the windy side as shown by the featured graph of hourly winds reported by the Ames Airport. The GFS model forecast for the next two days is also shown and after a bit of a relax in the winds today, Friday will again be blustery as well. The plot also shows the wind direction (dots) on Friday will be out of the northwest helping to bring in much cooler air for the weekend.
