Record Cold July

12 Aug 2009 06:11 AM
The featured map is from a NOAA story placing Iowa's July as the coldest on record for the state. We were not alone though with Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania also experiencing their coldest month on record. August has been a completely different story with highs near normal just about every day.

Weekend warmer than July

07 Aug 2009 06:08 AM
The forecast for this weekend calls for some of the warmest weather of the year. Temperatures will easily exceed anything we experienced during July as shown by the featured map. Hard to believe that the highest temperature for the month was just in the lower 80s.

Yet another July feature

05 Aug 2009 06:53 AM
The featured chart is of daily high and low temperature percentiles for Cedar Rapids this past July. It is amazing to think how cool the entire month was with not a single day over the 50th percentile for high temperature and only 1 day for low.

July Dew Points

04 Aug 2009 06:14 AM
This past July will probably be the coldest on record once all of the data is collected. The featured plot displays the average dew point for Des Moines for the past Julys since 1973. The lack of humidity helps to allow temperatures to cool off during the night time. August has started off muggy and warm, which is a welcome change of pace for now.

Keep featuring temperatures

21 Jul 2009 06:09 AM
Hard to not keep featuring the cool temperatures this month with another day expected below average today. Only two days this month have been above average for Ames and that was barely above (less than a full degree). The forecast does hold out some hope for a return to the 80s, but no major heat in store.

Two days all below 80

20 Jul 2009 12:59 AM
The amazingly cool July continued this past weekend with high temperatures again struggling to reach 70 degrees in some locations. The featured chart shows the daily range of high temperatures reported this year and back in 1936 for Iowa. Unofficial IEM data would indicate that two days this month were completely below 80 statewide. Since 1951, this has only happened one other year (in 1997). The forecast for the rest of the month looks to continue this cool pattern we have been in with the hot air remaining just to our west and south.

Sure isn't 1936

13 Jul 2009 06:03 AM
The featured chart is of high temperatures for Cedar Rapids from this July, July 1936, and the climatology. High temperatures this year have struggled to reach 80, while during 1936 highs were over 100 each day after the 5th. The forecast has highs in the 80s, but with numerous rain chances, clouds may again keep highs in the 70s.
