Windy Start to April

12 Apr 2016 05:34 AM
It is not your imagination, this April to date has been one of the recently windiest as recorded by the Des Moines Airport. The featured chart displays averaged wind speeds for the 1 thru 11 April period. A caveat is that the methodology and instrumentation for recording wind has changed over the years, so long term comparisons are difficult. That aside, this year is windiest since at least the early 1970s. Breezy conditions look to continue this week.

Large Rise

05 Apr 2016 05:35 AM
It has been a while roller coaster for temperatures in Iowa these past few days. Chilly weather on Saturday was followed by highs well into the 70s on Sunday with temperatures returning to the 50s and even cooler on Monday. For Sunday, the temperature at the Cedar Rapids airport rose from 25 to 80 degrees based on hourly temperature reports. Note, the actual rise based on summary data was one degree more! This change was one of the largest such changes on record based on the hourly data as shown by the featured chart.

Windy + Cool then Windy + Warm

04 Apr 2016 05:41 AM
What a remarkable past weekend this was. Both days experienced the same very strong winds, but a difference in direction among other things made for a 30 degrees difference in highs on Sunday. The featured chart displays Iowa averaged hourly temperature, wind speed, and wind direction. The arrows indicate the direction that the wind was blowing toward and you can see how we have round tripped the northwesterly to southwesterly and now back to northerly for Monday morning. The forecast does not include a return of the very warm conditions on Sunday any time soon.
