Record Precipitation for New Hampton

21 Dec 2016 05:34 AM
With only a few days remaining in the year, it is a good time to start reviewing 2016. For some locations in Northeastern Iowa, this was a record year for precipitation. One such location is New Hampton, which by current unofficial estimates has set a new yearly precipitation record. The featured chart presents the year to date accumulations for this year, two other very wet years of 2007 and 1993, average, and the minimum year of 1910. It is interesting to see 2016 was about at average up until mid June.

Warmest Fall

02 Dec 2016 05:34 AM
For the September through November period, the Des Moines Airport reported its warmest fall season on record this year as shown by the featured chart. It beat out 1931 and 2015 by a rather wide margin of a full degree. The chart depicts years that are above long term average in red and below in blue. Most of the recent years have been above this long term average and the yellow highlighted line depicts a 30 year trailing average that has been trending upward as well.

5 days of 80 Dewpoints

25 Jul 2016 05:31 AM
Much more pleasant air arrived in the state on Sunday afternoon, which ended a remarkable stretch of extremely humid weather. The featured chart displays the maximum dew point temperature as sampled by the hourly observations from the Cedar Rapids Airport weather station. The chart shows five straight days with this value reaching 80+ degrees. It is hard to find precedent for this stretch in the archives of Iowa weather.

Days to get an inch

05 Jul 2016 05:37 AM
Rainfall has been difficult to come by for parts of Iowa this summer. The featured map displays the number of days prior to Monday before an inch of precipitation is accumulated. This is computed for each pixel within the NOAA MRMS Q3 precipitation product. This map nicely highlights the very dry conditions that have persisted especially to the north and west of Ames. The orange color represents four to five weeks of time over which only an inch has accumulated. There is some hope for heavy rainfall this week, but the heat will be back in a big way as well.

Wet Winter

02 Mar 2016 05:38 AM
After the extremely wet December, it was almost a foregone conclusion that the winter season would come in at or near the top of the records for Iowa. The featured map displays IEM estimated climate district precipitation ranks for the December through February period. Six of the nine districts in Iowa are shown to have had the wettest winter season on record.
