Windy Aloft Too

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 05:30 AM

Today's daily feature continues the week long quest to show how windy this April has been. Today's feature looks aloft and presents the 850 millibar average wind speed for the morning sounding from Omaha. This plot also continues the line of why we can't have nice things by pointing out that analyses like these are subject to many caveats and changes with observation techniques over the years. But we again put those issues aside and hope for a metric that we can proudly boast with on social media for how exceptional this April has been! This level of the atmosphere is about a mile above the ground and important source of momentum to drive near surface wind speeds. So it stands to reason that the average speed this April at this level is well above long term average. Remarkably, the 2022 value is substantially higher than anything else on record for the site.
