Gusty Days

Posted: 27 Apr 2022 05:30 AM

This week, the IEM Daily Feature has been on a quest to find a metric that shows this April being perhaps one of the windiest on record as most folks tend to believe! The featured charts on Monday and Tuesday were not too conclusive, but perhaps gold has been struck with today's. The featured chart presents the number of days each April since the early 1970s with a wind gust of at least 30 knots (~35 MPH). Longer term data for wind gust are not available at this time, so we are not confined to the caveats of wind observations prior to the 1970s. So this metric has 2022 one day behind 1974 with four more days to go! Additionally, this year's total of 14 days is about twice of long term average of just seven days. So perhaps this metric is more suited for those that believe it has been exceptionally windy this April!
