Flash Flood Warnings

Posted: 25 Mar 2022 05:30 AM

This week has been Severe Weather Awareness Week for Iowa. Each day has a theme with the theme for Friday being Flash Flooding. The featured chart presents the number of Flash Flood Warnings issued over Iowa each year since 1986. Since this alert type is almost always associated with heavy rainfall, the chart intuitive correlates well with the wettest and driest years during this period. The wet years of 1993, 2008, and 2010 are immediately obvious with drought years of 1988 and 2012 apparent as well. While Flash Flood Warnings often don't get the attention that Tornado or Severe Thunderstorm Warnings get, they are just as dangerous with significant damage and sometimes loss of life associated with them.
