March Precipitation Distribution

Posted: 24 Mar 2022 05:32 AM

Some parts of the state have been putting a bit of a dent in the ongoing drought still lingering from last year. This is the time of year to start making up drought deficits as larger rainfall totals become increasingly possible as the atmosphere warms with spring. The featured chart looks at precipitation distribution metrics for March from long term Iowa climate sites. There is no spatial weighting to this analysis, so all sites are equally included. While the mean is not too far from average, values for this year over Iowa range from less than an inch to over five. So not everyone is participating in a wet March thus far. More chances of rain are in the forecast.
