Cold Lows after First 70

Posted: 17 Mar 2022 05:30 AM

Temperatures warmed very nicely on Wednesday with much of the state experiencing its warmest temperature so far this year. Ames was able to reach 70+ degrees for the first time this year. The featured chart looks into what happens after the first 70+ degree observation of the year for Ames. The top panel shows the minimum low temperature observed after this first date. The second panel shows that minimum low vs the date of the first 70 and the bottom panel shows the number of days each year until 1 June with a low below 32 after the first 70. So while one may hope that the first 70 is a benchmark for the arrival of spring, there is still plenty of time for chilly temperatures. Given that this happened early this year during mid March is another indicator that we have plenty of time left yet for very chilly temperatures.
