2021 Severe TStorm Totals

Posted: 20 Oct 2021 05:35 AM

The featured chart presents year to date accumulated Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for Iowa as computed by the IEM. While data exists back to 1986, the "modern era" / higher data quality starts in the year 2001. So the year to date total this year is the lowest since at least 1999. The year 2008 remains the high water benchmark with over 1,000 warnings plotted for this time period that year! It is difficult to infer a trend as warning methodology has changed over the years and the remotely sensed datasets have tremendously improved in resolution, quality, and timeliness. So while the total this year is the lowest over the modern era, it is not all that far away from previous years like 2015.
