End of August Steam

Posted: 25 Aug 2021 05:34 AM

Much of Iowa was in the sauna yesterday with heat index values in the triple digits. Such conditions are very much still possible even with the calendar now late into August. The featured chart presents the daily frequencies of having a heat index at or above 100 degrees, a max dew point temperature at or above 70 degrees, and the combined frequency of both for Des Moines. This nicely highlights the summer time season in the state with frequencies really ramping up in June and falling off in September. During mid July, the frequency of having a max dew point of at least 70 degrees is over 50%, but having a 100+ heat index is thankfully much less common. Obviously, the combination of a 70+ dew point and 100+ heat index nearly equals the 100+ heat index frequency as such humid conditions are necessary to drive a high heat index. The forecast continues the heat this week along with plenty of rainfall chances.
