The featured chart presents a meteogram for the Ames Airport since August 16th. The chart shows a time series of different variables observed by the station. Of note is the top panel, which shows air temperature and dew point. The dew point temperature is a floor that virtually supports the air temperature as the air temperature generally can not cool below the dew point unless the dew point is lowered by removing water from the air and that process releases heat which also helps to buoy the temperature. The difference between the 16th and 17th is informative as the increase in humidity yesterday is preventing cooler morning temperatures this morning as the dew point is some ten degrees warmer. The elevated humidity is one of the main reasons we need not worry about freezes until later in the year when even drier air masses are possible. It is one of the concerns with the ongoing drought situation, as a dry soil can cool more quickly and is not a source of atmospheric moisture to help buoy temperatures as mentioned above.
