Limited Extreme Dew Points

Posted: 13 Jul 2021 05:25 AM

The past week or so has seen very comfortable daily high temperatures and somewhat chilly, for July, low temperatures. The lack of very humid air allows for temperatures to cool more rapidly during the night time hours. Overall this year, we have not seen much in the way of very humid conditions with dew point values over even 70 only briefly happening. The featured chart presents a histogram of hourly dew point temperatures from Des Moines for the year to date period. The blue dots are a simple climatology and the red dots are the values for this year. At the 66 degree level, we are at about average. At higher levels, we are below average and vice versa. This chart shows no readings so far this year at 74 and higher, which is about when the dew point becomes oppressive.
