Green County Deluge

Posted: 30 Jun 2021 05:43 AM

It is summer time in Iowa. This typically means that surface humidity levels are high, the atmosphere above our heads has plenty of moisture, and storm motions are not all that fast. This sometimes results in spectacular gradients of rainfall over small distances as an efficient and isolated thunderstorm matures and then dies off over about the same area. Such was the case Tuesday afternoon over far southern Greene County, Iowa. The featured map is zoomed in on Greene County (just west of Des Moines) and presents MRMS precipitation estimates. You don't need to travel many miles to find areas without any measurable precipitation estimated and those with over four inches. The NWS got a report from this area of 5.5 inches!
