Dew Points over 70

Posted: 25 Jun 2021 05:21 AM

Muggy air was present over much of Iowa on Thursday, which helped to drive some significant rainfall totals over southern Iowa. The featured chart presents the frequency by hour and week of the year of having a 70+ degree dew point temperature for Des Moines. Such values are confined to the summer months due to a number of factors including the need for air temperatures to be at least that warm and sources of water to evaporate into the air to be available (transpiring crops, Gulf of Mexico transport, and establishment of the Bermuda High). So the chart shows that we still have plenty of time yet this summer to experience such muggy conditions and the highest frequencies found during July and into early August are still to come.
