Bloomfield Precipitation

Posted: 26 May 2021 05:43 AM

Over the past month or so, the IEM Daily Feature has often focused on the drought situation in the state. Some parts of the state have not been dry at all, but too wet and particularly during May. A case in point is Bloomfield, which is well south and east of Des Moines. The featured chart presents accumulated precipitation since 15 April with climatology plotted along with the envelope of historical data over this period. The dry end to April quickly reversed for the location with over seven inches now accumulated during May. Combined with cool temperatures, crops have suffered in this region from too much moisture and not enough heat leading to some replanting of failed acres. Chillier temperatures and more rain is in the forecast, so not a good combination for southeastern Iowa.
