Dearth of Severe Weather

Posted: 14 May 2021 05:34 AM

The lack of severe weather so far this spring season has been a big story. While most do not hope for thunderstorms warranting NWS warnings, these storms do bring needed rainfall for our growing season. A previous IEM Daily Feature put the precipitation contribution during severe thunderstorms at about 10% for Des Moines. The featured map presents an IEM calculation of the departure from 20 year average of year to date issued Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Warnings. Negative (below average) departures are shown over much of the country with only a few limited regions having a higher number than average for the period. The map also denotes the overall nationwide departure at over 1,800 warnings.
