Inch Coverage

Posted: 26 Apr 2021 12:00 AM

Based on grid analyses of daily precipitation, the featured chart presents a time series of estimated areal coverage over Iowa of having at least an inch of precipitation over the trailing seven day period. Rewording, how much of the state has received at least an inch over the previous seven days. The chart shows the meager totals so far this April that look to persist to the end of this week and into the start of May. It continues to be concerning that we are missing out on rainfall during an important time of year for soil moisture recharge. There is a benefit for the agricultural community as spring planting can progress at full speed this week, but some areas have reported difficult planting conditions with too dry of soils impacting planter performance.
