Last Measurable Snowfall

Posted: 19 Apr 2021 12:00 AM

The S-word is in the forecast for Monday and Tuesday with the highest totals expected to be confined to far southern Iowa. Hope springs eternal that this may be the last snowfall of the season and having the last measurable snowfall on 19 April or later is a bit exceptional as shown by the featured chart. The chart presents the last date and amount of measurable (at least a tenth of an inch) daily snowfall, the accumulated frequency and the number of days measurable snow depth was observed for each report. The good news is that snow this time of year will not stick around long with warm soil temperatures and any bit of sunshine making quick work of it. The bad news is that this chart again reminds us of the 2-3 days of snowfall we had during the first week of May 2013.
