Hit some of the D3

Posted: 12 Apr 2021 05:36 AM

Each week on Thursday, a working group of folks issue an updated "US Drought Monitor" which reflects seven days worth of changes since the previous week's update. To allow the authors of the product some time to create the product, the cut off time for considering weather reports is Tuesday morning. So the featured map presents MRMS precipitation departures from average over about the seven days that will be considered this week along with last week's Drought Monitor analysis. The heaviest rainfalls fell over southeastern Iowa over the weekend, whose area is completely outside of any current drought analysis. The "D3" region over northwestern Iowa did get some rainfall over this period, but even heavier totals conveniently avoided the region. Dryness concerns continue to increase over north central Iowa, which missed out again. This is an important time of year for soil moisture recharge and buffering typical late summer dryness with saturated soils. Rainfall totals this week continue to look meager.
