SWAW 2021: Warning Reception

Posted: 23 Mar 2021 05:35 AM

Today's topic for Severe Weather Awareness Week (SWAW) in Iowa is warning reception. Unfortunately, many people have the "siren mentality" which believes that their local municipal warning siren will alert them to when threatening weather approaches. These sirens are meant to warn people that are *outdoors* and may not always be heard indoors. The sirens are not bulletproof either and may fail as threatening weather approaches. It is good to have multiple methods of receiving NWS warnings that may include: weather radios, enabled weather alerts on your smart phone, following automated bots on social media, and/or signing up for notification services from various weather vendors. The featured screenshot from Twitter shows an NWS automated bot @NWSTornado that posts information about Tornado Warnings. Again, these social media bots are not meant to be a sole source of information to keep you weather aware, but one of multiple sources.
