La Nina Winter

Posted: 03 Mar 2021 05:36 AM

Even though the present La Nina state of the ENSO index is weak, this winter season has had a La Nina feel with plenty of snow and only brief intense cold temperatures. Of course, there is no simple and direct relationship between our actual weather and/or single season climate and the ENSO index, but it is always fun to look for one. The featured chart presents such a comparison with the comparison between winter season precipitation and average temperature color coded by the November 3-month-averaged value of the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI, a part of ENSO). The 2020-2021 season value is labelled on the chart and the left two panels directly compare each seasonal precip with SOI index. There is more noise to signal with these charts, but you are free to generate your own comparison!
