Cold Wind Chills

Posted: 26 Feb 2021 05:34 AM

The featured chart presents an accounting of the amount of time spent below a given wind chill temperature threshold based on hourly data for Des Moines. The chart only considers the cases whereby wind speeds were strong enough to cause a decreased wind chill temperature. The winter to date season this year is compared with a simple average from previous years. The prolonged cold spell earlier in February really racked up the totals, but not for the extreme cold values below -32 degrees. It is also curious to see the below average totals for thresholds closer to zero. The brutal cold for this winter season has been intense, but on the slightly brief than average side so far.
