Coldest Ten Days
Posted: 18 Feb 2021 05:36 AM
We continue to dig ourselves out of a cold temperature hole with moderating values expected into the
weekend and above freezing temperatures even by early next week. We've experienced a
remarkable stretch of cold temperatures and the featured chart presents an analysis of the coldest
ten day period each year for Des Moines for average high temperature. The season low value for this
year is shown by the last bar on the upper right plot and there's only a handful of previous years with
colder values shown. The left two panels provide the timing within the season when this period
occurs and having such a period in February is only less frequent than January. Perhaps there is
some solace knowing that the worst of winter, as far as temperatures, is very likely now behind us.
