Un-Energetic

Twice a day, hundreds of locations around the globe take vertical profile soundings of the atmosphere via instrumentation carried aloft by weather balloons. These soundings provide valuable snapshots of the state of the atmosphere. The featured chart presents January wind speed percentiles for the Sunday evening sounding from Omaha, NE. Smaller percentiles imply calmer than average winds for the given level in the atmosphere. Powerful winter storm systems will have strong winds thanks to increased pressure gradients associated with the storm. The profile featured does not have much for strong winds and it is no wonder that our weather remains calm for the second week of January.
