Climate Periods

Posted: 08 Jan 2021 05:32 AM

Every ten years, the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI, formerly NCDC) updates the climate normals database covering the previous 30 years. This update is scheduled to happen later in 2021 to cover the period from 1991 to 2020. This update will replace the current climate normals covering the 1981-2010 period. This featured chart presents a look into how the climatology changed the last time this happened back in 2011. The chart shows three climatologies with the bars representing simple averages over the period of record. While there are some mechanistic changes between the two 30 year climatologies shown (a change from integer to decimal values), the difference between the two was about two degrees. We shall see how large the changes are with this upcoming update, which is rumored to be updated in May 2021.
