NW Iowa Continued D3 Drought

Posted: 10 Dec 2020 05:39 AM

An updated US Drought Monitor will be released later this Thursday morning and will likely show no improvements in the state as our weather remains very dry. The driest area within the state remains over northwestern Iowa with the featured chart highlighting precipitation departures coincident with the US Drought Monitor category for Sheldon, IA. The improvements shown with the 31 and 91 day departures are a bit misleading as this time of year's climatology values are already very low accumulations, so large negative numbers are not possible as compared with summertime. The trailing 365 total tells a better story and large deficits have accumulated for the year to date period. The forecast for the upcoming week has the vast majority of the moisture over southeastern Iowa.
