December Comparables

Posted: 04 Dec 2020 05:37 AM

Our tranquil weather for December continues to roll along with high temperatures nicely into the 40s and perhaps even a 50 degree temperature can be found next week given the current forecast. It is hard to gauge temperatures like these during the cold season for how relatively warm they are for December. One way to gauge temperatures is to make direct comparisons via quantile plots to other months of the year. The quantiles align frequencies such that a given temperature in December is as common for the month as compared to another temperature during June. The 50 degree value for December is highlighted, which equates to a 91 degree temperature in June. Most would likely agree that a 91 degree temperature during June is plenty warm for Iowa, so we should treat 50 degrees during December as such!
