The National Weather Service issues a number of product types with the aim of protecting life and property. The Area Forecast Discussion (AFD) is a meta product that provides an "inside baseball" look into the forecaster's thinking and reasoning with the near term forecast. The featured map presents the number of such products issued so far this year by NWS forecast office. This product is used and issued differently by each office to fit local traditions and usage patterns. Some offices have automation included within the product as well, so each issuance is not necessarily a new collection of forecast thoughts.
