Going for Six Days of 70+

Posted: 05 Nov 2020 05:33 AM

Many places in the state were able again to eek out 70+ degrees for a high temperature on Wednesday. Des Moines has been comfortably in the 70s for two straight days now and the present NWS forecast has some optimism that this streak could last into Sunday making for an amazing stretch of six days at or above 70 degrees for the site. The featured chart presents the frequency of having such a stretch by day of the year. Having such a streak during November is unprecedented and would be a full week later than the previous latest such stretch ending on 1 November 1915 and 1 November 1944. The chart nicely shows the rapid drop in frequency during the month of September as cooler temperatures become more common as the fall season sets in for Iowa.
