Reaching 80+ after freeze

Posted: 09 Oct 2020 06:11 AM

High temperatures are expected to soar this Friday into the 80s and even approach 90 degrees! This is rather exceptional considering that much of the state say sub freezing temperatures this past weekend. The featured chart presents some metrics on the maximum high temperature for the fall season after the first sub-freezing temperature for Ames. The top panel shows the maximum temperature for that period, the center panel compares the maximum temperature against the first fall sub freezing date and the bottom panel shows the number of days with a high of at least 80 degrees. Having an early October freeze certainly helps to allow such a warm temperature afterwards as climatology's envelope still has such warm days for the first few weeks of October.
