2020 Tornado Watches

Posted: 04 Sep 2020 05:34 AM

With all the wild and crazy things happening this year, the weather has not added much stability to 2020. One of the crazy aspects of the weather this year has been the general absence of tornado producing thunderstorms over the traditionally 'Tornado Alley' stretching from eastern Nebraska to northern Texas. The featured map is an IEM analysis attempt to show the difference between the number of tornado watches issued this year vs the past 20 years. The aforementioned 'Tornado Alley' is readily apparent with the darker blues indicating four to six fewer watches this year. While not having tornadic thunderstorms is a good thing, this lack of thunderstorm activity has contributed to the drought situation.
