Forecasting Stage

Posted: 23 Jun 2020 03:13 AM

While some parts of the state have not been getting enough rain recently, other parts have been getting too much. Particularly hard hit has been the area west and south of Waterloo with recent rainfall totals over seven inches in spots. The National Weather Service has the difficult task of producing river stage forecasts for many forecast points of interest. The featured chart presents sequentially issued river stage forecasts for the Iowa River near Tama (SW of Waterloo) along with observed values (black line). The rapid response in observed and forecast stage from yesterday's heavy rainfall can be readily seen.
