Frequencies Decreasing

Posted: 21 Apr 2020 04:53 AM

The featured chart presents the daily frequency during April that the low temperature was below 29 degrees for Ames based on period of record data. Such cold temperatures are hard on tender plants this time of year and generally curtails more planting activity until the threat is lower. For farmers, it is certainly enticing to start planting as warmer air and soil temperatures along with not too much recent rain has fields ready to go. As what seems to happen each year though, a window of great mid April weather that allows for planting is replaced by wet and cooler days in late April and May that leave newly planted fields vulnerable. Climatology is in our favor, but the frequencies are non-zero yet!
