2019 Severe Thunderstorm Tags

Posted: 24 Mar 2020 03:22 AM

With everything going on in the world, it is understandable that this week being Severe Weather Awareness week is going rather unnoticed. Iowa designates this week to prepare for the upcoming severe weather station and today's topic is warning reception. Warnings are issued by the National Weather Service and in the case of Severe Thunderstorm (SVR) Warnings, include special tags that highlight estimated peak wind gusts and hail size. The featured chart presents the combination frequency of these tags for SVR warnings covering some portion of Iowa during 2019. The thresholds for issuance are either 58+ mph winds or 1 inch diameter hail. The chart shows that a majority of our storms for 2019 were at this minimum severe threshold.
