After First 64

Posted: 26 Feb 2020 05:34 AM

Yesterday's IEM Daily Feature presented statistics regarding the first spring date with a daily high temperature of 64 degrees, which Des Moines hit this past Sunday. Today's plot looks into what happened after such date for the rest of the spring season up until 1 June. The top panel shows the minimum low temperature each year after the first 64+ degree high temperature. The second panel shows the minimum low by date of first 64 degree high. The third panel counts the number of days with low temperature below 32 after such date. The value so far for 2020 is highlighted in red. The chart shows that having a low temperature down to about zero would be somewhat exceptional, but not outside of what's happened in the past. The forecast has some chilly temperatures this evening, but moderation afterwards with another warm weekend in store.
