Recency Bias

There is a bit of public anguish over the ongoing stretch of cloudy, foggy, and snowy weather that has seemingly persisted for the entire month of January. One has likely already forgotten that Des Moines hit 59 degrees this month on the 9th! The featured chart presents a visualization of available visibility and sky coverage reports from the Des Moines Airport for the month. For the top panel, the blue areas are an attempt at clear skies irrespective of the time of the day up vertically until a cloud deck causes obscuring. So while the chart reinforced our current stretch of gloomy weather, there was a number of periods earlier this month with less gloomy weather.
