Friday Ice

Posted: 17 Jan 2020 05:47 AM

The long advertised major winter storm for today and Saturday is at last here. The featured map is forecast ice accumulation totals from the National Weather Service. The map shows a tenth to two tenths of an inch over a considerable chunk of the state. Heavy snowfall is expected as well along with strong winds, blowing snow, and a rapid temperature drop which will likely ice up roadways even more. The exact combination of ice and snow has been a challenging forecast as significant ice accumulations need to have a supply of near surface below freezing temperatures to support ice accumulation. Temperatures will be warming today as winds howl from the southeast, but are expected to top off below freezing for most of the state.
