Already to Freezing

Posted: 18 Nov 2019 05:34 AM

Our recent stretch of cold air temperatures and snow have helped to cool soil temperatures to very chilly levels for mid November. The featured chart shows daily average four inch depth soil temperatures at Nashua (North of Waterloo). This year's time series is in red, with all previous years since 1988 plotted in blue along with a simple average of them all in black. Recent values for this year are shown to be well below average and near the bottom of the observed range. In fact, the average value is already near freezing.
