Comparing Three Weeks

Posted: 16 Jul 2019 05:34 AM

For some portions of Iowa, the past three weeks have been rather dry. The featured chart compares total precipitation for a three week period before and after 23 June for Des Moines. The value for 2019 is indicated by the red dot with simple long-term averages for each period shown. The intersecting average lines create four sectors to the plot and their frequency is shown as well. Of interest is that it is more frequent to have below average precipitation for each period than it to have above average for both periods. The combination this year is in quadrant IV and has about a one in four year frequency.
