Potential ET

For most of Iowa, the weather on Wednesday was exactly what we needed with mostly sunny skies, low humidity, and brisk winds. It would have been nice for it to be warmer and for no rainfall anywhere, but beggars can't be choosers at this point. One measure of the effectiveness of the air to help dry out the ground is the estimate of potential evapo- transpiration made by the ISU Soil Moisture weather stations. The featured chart displays the daily values this month from the ISU Ag Farm west of Ames. The estimate on Wednesday is the nearly highest of the month so far. It will take a number more of these type of days to dry out fields for work to progress again, but the forecast is not too optimistic that many of these days are in the immediate future.
