Not always warmer

Posted: 21 May 2019 05:34 AM

Sadly, Monday was yet another chilly May day in Iowa and the highs on Tuesday are expected to be even a touch colder. This time of year our daily average high temperatures, on average, slowly creep higher, but our actual temperature do not always do so. The featured chart depicts the frequency of the change in the day to day high temperature by month for Des Moines. The long term average is shown along with this year's values. While the chart does show a subtle annual cycle, the magnitude is rather muted and only equates to one or two days per month on balance. Rewording, just because our highs are increasing daily on average this time of year, the actual day to day change is not always as such.
