Soil Temperature Response

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 05:33 AM

The featured chart is a wonderful presentation of soil temperature response to warmer conditions that have visited the state this week. The data is from the Ames ISU Hort Farm since last Saturday. The change in diurnal response with depth is beautifully illustrated as soil closer to the ground surface is more influenced by what's happening in the lower atmosphere and solar radiation input. The inertia of the soil creates a lag for heating above to reach lower depths. For the plot, only during the last day did some heating reach the 50 inch depth.
