Comparing Climo

Posted: 26 Mar 2019 05:33 AM

High temperatures on Tuesday are expected to be seasonable again with most of the state in the 50s. Southwestern Iowa will be closer to 60 degrees while northeastern Iowa will be closer to 50 degrees. Such differences are about average for this time of the year as shown by the featured plot comparing daily climatology between Shenandoah (SW Iowa) and Decorah (NE Iowa). The bottom panel directly compares the two and shows the largest differences in average high temperature occur during the late winter into early spring season. Such differences are contributed to by snow cover differences and the relative location to warmer air masses to our south and west as well as down-sloping that warms air off the Rocky Mountains.
