May Comparables

Posted: 13 Dec 2016 05:34 AM

The forecasted high temperature on Thursday for Ames is a mere 12 degrees. How exceptional is such a temperature? The featured charts present a couple of ways to compare daily high temperatures between two months. The left hand plot shows a quantile - quantile plot, which compares frequencies between two months. So a daily high of 12 in December is comparable in frequency to a high of 55 in May. The right hand plot shows the distributions of daily highs for the two months in the form of a violin plot. The violins are truncated in half to allow both months to be compared at the same time. It is kind of interesting to see the median from one month closely match the extreme of the other month.
